Paris collected, washed, & carried the eggs to the fridge this week. I was amazed at how careful and gentle he was. Three weeks ago I wouldn’t have believed it was possible.

We got to bring home some eggs from UBC Farm, that were cracked or too big for the carton.  Cassius wanted to make them into a omelet when we got home. He cracked open the giant egg and two yokes fell out! “I was just going to say that egg was big enough for two,” Cassius exclaimed.

“There are lots of mysteries in the world! How was the planet made, and are there other planets out there with people on them, and what language do they speak?”

“When I was little I use to imagine that the earth was flat and the sun moved around it. I understand why people use to believe that because that’s what I use to believe.”

- Cassius

Another Questions from Cassius:

“How many eyes does a spider have? Is there animal that has more?”

Tigerlily

Cassius has two Leopard Geckos which he takes care of. We have had Tigerlily for a year and Dandylion since last Christmas. We have to wait until they are close to the same size before we can put them together.

Dandylion

For some reason Dandylion is growing very slowly. Tigerlily is calm, eats a lot, and likes to be held – Whereas Dandylion is jumpy and shy. The really have very different personalities. We are trying to feed Dandylion more crickets to see if she will grow more. We also took out some wood we thought the crickets might be hiding in. Grow Dandylion, grow!

Cassius announced that he wanted to practice drawing so that he would get good at it. He copied a picture of Garfield’s face from one of his comic-books. He did it the exact same size as the one in the book so it was very small. He then suggested that we scan it and blow it up. He thought it would look better bigger and if we made it big enough he wanted to make a mask out it.

We blew it up and it was all pixely and blurry. He went into a frustrated tirade about how he was horrible at drawing and was never drawing again etc. He is very hard on himself if he’s not perfect the first time.

I said, “You said you wanted to practice – drawing one little drawing is not practicing – until I see ten cats I don’t want to talk about how horrible you are at drawing. “

He was so upset I didn’t think he would go for it, but within an hour I had ten cats in front of me and a happy boy. He had to agree they got better as he went along. (He had to figuring out how many more he had to draw also – Garfield Math!)

What’s the difference between an amphibian and a reptile?

We found the answer to Cassius’ question The Children’s Animal Encyclopedia which we have been using since Cassius was very young. We have sat for hours reading it together.

Paris takes good care of his stuffed animals. Here he is putting a diaper on his bear.

Lately we have acquired two microscopes. A small mirror one & a larger electric one. We experimented with both of them and definitely prefer the electric one. We are dreaming of getting a digital one that show the image on your computer screen

We have the microscopes set up permanently and Cassius often takes a look at things he’s found out side. Cassius has assembles quite a collection of bees, hives and butterfly wings. We’ve found that the smaller and flatter we make things the easier they are to see. Human hair has worked well. We would be like to be able to see even closer then we can (not all the lenses work so we have limited choice.)

We have been using this book which I recommend:

We did the first activity where you make your own microscope with a piece of board with a hole in it, plastic & a drop of water. It worked!
